ISC COFFEE EVENING 19/10/10

In many European cultures, going for coffee is almost a synonym for relaxation, chat and fun in a very casual, stress-free environment. Following this age-old practice, we at the ISC invite you to come for free coffee (or tea), biscuits and cheese!

Drop in on Tuesday the 19th October from 16.00 to 18.00 for a chat, a munch of free snacks and good company! If you're going to have a break from work...have it the ISC way.

NOTE: The day of 'Coffee Evenings' has changed. It used to be on a Thursday, but it is now on a TUESDAY.

ISC Trip: 23/10/10 ABERFELDY WHISKY DISTILLERY

Tickets for this event will go on sale on Monday 18^th at the ISC (22b Buccleuch street) at 18.00, at £12.00 each.

Scotland, aside from being the homeland of golf, is known for being the birthplace of whisky. Follow the ISC on Saturday 23^rd October at 8.45a.m. on our trip to Aberfeldy, a small town hidden away in the Scottish highlands, where we plan to visit a whisky distillery owned by Dewar.

Dewar whisky is a guaranteed superb quality highland whisky, and the distillery has just begun the whisky making process for this year. The visit will include entry to a museum about the history of Dewar’s whisky, as well as a walking tour of the distillery itself. At the end of the tour, a free whisky sampling will give your taste buds a flavour of highland Scotch.

Following the tour of the distillery, you may choose to stroll around the picturesque town of Aberfeldy, barely 5 minutes away from the distillery on foot. On the other hand, you can spend the rest of the afternoon at the distillery café.

ISC FILM NIGHT 18/10/10

On Monday 18th October at 19.30, join us for a glimpse into a culture very different from the one of our host country. At 22b Buccleuch street, we at the ISC will be watching PERSEPOLIS, a French animated film (don't worry, it has English subtitles for those of us who are not very fluent in French!). This film is based on a book by Marjane Satrapi about her life in Iran during the 1970s. It's both a technically and an artistically accoladed film and is quite recent too. And in case you get peckish, as most of us do during films, snacks will be available.

In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life. However, this change proves an equally difficult trial with the young woman finding herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. Even when she returns home, Marji finds that both she and homeland have changed too much and the young woman and her loving family must decide where she truly belongs.

This is a free event, therefore there are no tickets to be sold.

Who would say no to pancakes? Especially when there's also the 'Bone Game' and a film afterwards?? Come over and join us for an evening packed with fun and sugar. Please note that, due to the capacity of our lounge, only those who have bought the tickets last week can join us.

Pop in for a chat, we will have free coffee/tea along with biscuits and cheese ready for you. A great time and place to just mingle and relax from the workload!

PUB NIGHT 21:00- @ the Greenmantle (44 Westcrosscauseway)
Gather around at the Greenmantle, just 5 min walk away from the ISC. They have some special deals with us including £1.75 for vodka mix, bottled beer, small wine as well as 30 % discounts for any food (served till midnight)! When you are ordering your drinks for these deals, make sure you mention that you are with the "ISC / society" otherwise you won't be benefiting from the deals.


Saturday, 16th

RAFTING TRIP & HIKING TRIP (to DUNKELD)
This weekend is packed with activities - be it on water or on land!

***IMPORTANT INFO for RAFTERS*****

Please gather at the ISC @10:30 on the 16th - we will hop on the coach and head towards the Highlands then! We also recommend that you bring some packed lunch along with you, as we will be reaching our destination after noon. If you wish, bring something to eat after rafting as well, as you will most likely be starving! However, we will be making a brief stop on our way back at Dunkeld, where you could buy something to eat on the coach - it's up to you =)

And for those of you who might want to plan their lovely Saturday evenings, we will be arriving back in Edinburgh around 19:00.

ISC Dunkeld Hiking Trip - 16/10/10

Have you dreamt of exploring the breathtaking Scottish Highlands? Here’s your chance! ISC’s Dunkeld Hiking Trip will not only take you to the praised Highlands, but also, give you the time to admire and explore its sights and sounds!

We’ll be taking two different trails – The Atholl Woods and the Larch Walk.

The Atholl Woods has received applauses from leisure hikers, and its not surprising why. Atholl Woods stretches over many acres of hill country to the north of Dunkeld offering delightful walks and open views around the vast conifer plantations. The walk through Atholl Woods passes along the banks of two small but attractive lochs. Mill Dam always has large numbers of wildfowl, including widgeon, mallard and tufted ducks. Polney Loch, also known as the Goat's Pool, lies beneath the imposing cliffs of Craig a' Barns and has a distinctly Swiss atmosphere created by its situation and scenery.

The Larch Walk is equally stunning. This walk offers in miniature many of the sights to be enjoyed on a larger scale elsewhere in the area. . The Dunkeld Larches can also be seen near the river and include the remaining `Parent Larch`, which stands 100 feet high near the west end of the cathedral. This tree is the last survivor from a group of five planted by the 2nd Duke of Atholl in 1738. Also, hikers will get the chance to visit the Dunkeld Cathedral. The Dunkeld Cathedral is part ruin, part parish church.

So, what are you waiting for? This is YOUR CHANCE to explore the beautiful Highlands on foot, at your own pace instead of just passing by when you’re on a tour bus! We leave at 10.30 a.m. and return at 7.00p.m. on Saturday 16th October.

Tickets will be sold on Monday 11th October at 6.00p.m., in the ISC lounge at £6.00 each.

Quick Note on the Meeting Point for the Trip Tomorrow!

If you bought a ticket to join us on the trip to Linlithgow tomorrow, please keep reading. ;)

Just a quick note on the meeting point for tomorrow morning - we will be meeting at Waverley train station, the big station below North Bridge.

The station, as you might know, is rather big and busy, so the meeting point is THE INFORMATION POINT on the main concourse. NOT to be confused with the tourist information on top of the station. Again, we'll meet inside the station, at the information point. Make sure you get there by 8.45am.

NORTH AMERICAN NIGHT

As October slips into its second week, we remain in the Northern hemisphere, moving away from Sweden across the Atlantic to North America. Join us on the 11th October at the ISC for a night packed with food and fun! Come prepared for a round of the 'Bone Game', as well as plenty of pancakes with sinfully delicious maple syrup from our own International House (well...Centre) of Pancakes. If you feel lucky, why don't you try a Jeopardy-style North-American slang quiz? Possible prizes include maple candies, while on a more serious note, a discussion of US culture vs Canadian culture will ensue, set relative to the perspective of the UK.
Finally our sweet-toothed night of revelry will be wrapped up with a film screening, during which you hopefully won't fall asleep, after having eaten all that sugar.

Tickets will be sold on Wednesday 6th October from 6 -7 pm in the International Student Centre lounge. Make sure you get yours before they run out!
