Winter Greetings from the ISC

It is indeed, 19 days till Christmas and the end of the Semester I is fast approaching!

The ISC will be closed from now until the beginning of Semester II in January 2011 but we hope you are all well, working hard through exam preparations and/or essays, looking forward to the winter break. The ISC would like to thank you all for your involvement with the ISC and very much hope that your time with us made your Semester I at the university more memorable.

This is also the sad time of the year when we have to bid farewell to those who are leaving us. We wish you the best where ever you end up - you will be missed! We hope you enjoyed Edinburgh with its rain, wind, occasional sun and snow...and of course, your time at the ISC! :D

The Semester II Schedules for our weekly Trips and Events are now ready as well - their links and thank yous from the committees are also included below:

*******

Hi all!

First of all, thank you very much for filling in our poll - it was great to have so many of you telling us where you'd like to go!
Surely you'll be curious about the outcome & want to know what we came up with for next semester...

So here you go, the Semester 2 Trips Schedule!
http://isced.blogspot.com/2010/12/trips-semester-ii-schedule.html

Not only will we give you another chance to visit some of our most popular destinations, like St Andrews or Newcastle, we shall also take you to new places - cities, castles and nature trips alike! Don't miss the chance to explore the best of Scotland and Northern England for our cheap prices, and most importantly, the great company of your ISC friends!

Ticket sale times will be announced closer in time, but will most likely be on Monday nights again.
Following some complaints about our ticket sales, we have decided to give out provisional tickets 10-15 minutes before the start of the ticket sale, and hopefully this will reduce the in-vain waiting time for those who can't get a ticket. Those who do will then wait to sign-up & pay to get their real ticket.
I hope you understand that as volunteers, there is not much more we can do to facilitate things, but hopefully this solution will make things easier & more efficient for everyone.

We hope you enjoyed our first semester trips - we did enjoy taking you there!

Good luck with exams, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We from Trips Com are busy planning the trips for second semester, but of course we'd like to have your input and want to know where you would like to go!
So if you could take a few moments and fill in our short poll, that would be really great. Thanks :)

ISC TRIP TO NORTH BERWICK 27/11/10

Hello,

Another exciting ISC trip coming up!

On Saturday, 27th of November, we will be going to North Berwick. This picturesque seaside town only 25 miles from Edinburgh is ideal for a daytrip: Apart from the charming town itself, you can visit 2 castles, the Scottish Seabird Centre and enjoy the beautiful beach and several golf courses.

As it is St Andrews Weekend, the Historic Attractions will be free (this includes both of the castles), so don’t miss the opportunity!

We will go by train, and therefore meet on Saturday morning at 9:15am at Waverly station, in front of the platforms. The tickets will be £6 and the ticket sale is as always on Monday at 6pm at the ISC.

Hopefully see you there!

Tuesday, 16 November 2010

ISC INDIAN NIGHT 22/11/10

Tickets for this event will be sold on Wednesday the 17th November from 6 - 7pm at the ISC.

The end of the semester draws near, but our international-themed evenings are nowhere near over. That’s right, Indian night is up next!

On the 22nd November, starting 8p.m., as expected, there will be food – however, we will not be serving curry! We will be serving assortments of chaat (a popular, savoury snack sold on the streets of India, devoured by school kids, uni students and professionals), pakoras (fried snack/fritter with onions, potatoes or cottage cheese) and kulfi (traditional Indian ice cream).

During and after the food, there will follow a powerpoint and/or quiz on Indian culture, including information on bollywood.

And to finish off, a movie: Lagaan.

This is the most recent Oscar nominated film (aside from Slumdog millionaire) with elements taken from Bollywood and Indian history.

Sunday, 14 November 2010

ISC TRIP TO NEWCASTLE & HADRIAN'S WALL

Come along with us on Saturday 20th November to discover the wonders of a renowned world heritage site, Hadrian’s Wall, where you will have the chance to walk around the wall and find out about it at a Visitor Centre!

We will then head off to Newcastle where you can admire the Gateshead Millennium Bridge - the world's first and only tilting bridge! Not forgetting the fabulous Newcastle monument.

Lastly, you can visit the Castle Keep or Grainger Market (depending on the time), both destinations are well rooted to in Newcastle’s history. The Castle Keep of Newcastle upon Tyne was built by Henry II between 1168-1178, it is one of the finest surviving examples of a Norman Keep in the country. The Castle Keep is a Grade 1 listed building, a Scheduled Ancient monument. While on the other hand, the Grainger Market was the largest in Europe when first built in the 1830s. Now a Grade I listed building, there are plenty of stalls with fresh produce from a wide range of butchers, greengrocers and fishmongers.

Hidden within is the unique ‘Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar’, the world's smallest Marks and Spencer store.

So... always wanted to know what a gordie accent sounds like? Want to walk over the famous Millenium Bridge? Or just want to spend an afternoon shopping or sitting in an English pub for a change?

Then come to the ISC on Monday, 15.11. @ 6pm to get your ticket for this trip - which you can get for a mere £10!

P.S. For Katy Perry fans who want to keep the fireworks going: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGJuMBdaqIw&ob=av2e (The ISC has no association with Katy Perry or her music, but the song title seemed appropriate)

STIRLING TRIP 30/10/10

FROM OUR TRIPS COORDINATOR:
Hey all,

First of all I'm sorry for those of you who wanted to come along but couldn't get a ticket last Monday, unfortunately, this time we can't provide a second bus for you. Sorry!
However, what we can do is get some more people into the castle for free. Stirling is easily and cheaply reached from Edinburgh by train - if you get an off-peak ticket, an open-return ticket should only cost you £8. So if you want, you can organise your transport to Stirling yourself and then join the ISC group at the castle.
**Please make sure you bring your Edinburgh University Matriculation Card and show it to the volunteers on saturday (Lydia and Samiko) so that they know that you are from the ISC!**

Potentially, we could take 50 people more into the castle so don't be afraid to come along if you don't mind getting there by train!

**The meeting times at the castle would be 11am & 12am**, so make sure you are there on time if you'd like to get in with the ISC.

Please note that we do NOT organise the train tickets for you, you should do that independently, and we can also NOT get you to the Wallace Monument alongside everyone else. Of course you are more than welcome to also come along, but you would have to find out yourself how to get there and back.
The only thing we can offer those who travel to Stirling independantly is free entry to the castle if they bring their Matriculation Cards and show it to the volunteers, who will be Lydia and Samiko.

If you decide to take this option, please post on the event wall
(http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=170340826313021&ref=ts ) so we have an idea how many people to expect! Thank you :)

Have you wondered whether Nessie (a.k.a. the Loch Ness monster) exists? Have you wanted to find out how high Ben Nevis really is? Curious to explore the wild and rough Highlands of Northern Scotland but not quite sure how? Then this is a trip for you!

Right after Guy Fawkes’ night, the ISC will embark on a two-day trip (6th and 7th November) to the luscious green fields and valleys known as the Highlands. Scenery in northern Scotland ranges from snow-capped mountains to emerald green meadows, perhaps with a few Highland cows dotted here and there. Yet this trip will not focus only on Scotland’s wild and natural beauty, but also cater for the interests of history-lovers. The latter is provided by professional guides who will accompany us throughout the trip with visits to places such as Culloden battlefield and regale us with tales of Rob Roy, William Wallace and many other fascinating heroes and villains of Scottish history.

After the first day’s sightseeing, we shall make camp (not literally…) in Inverness, also known as the capital of the Highlands. However, despite the exhaustion we will no doubt be feeling, the occasion calls for celebration of Scotland and general Scottish pride. A party is not a party in Scotland until the ceilidh band have begun to sing. And that is just what they will do. With a professional ceilidh band and a first class venue at Thistle Hotel, we will dance the night (and the calories) away!

Please see the click-able map below for the itinerary of this two-day journey:

Tickets will be sold on Tuesday 19th at the ISC from 18.30 at the price of £80.00 per person. Only one ticket is allowed per person, and only 100 tickets will be sold. Please bring cash only and bear in mind that a matriculation card is required for purchase.

The ticket price encompasses costs for entertainment, accommodation, transport, guides, the ceilidh band, dinner prepared by volunteers and a continental breakfast in the morning. As we will be travelling during the two days, lunches will need to be purchased separately at the stops and sites chosen.

Hope to see you there!

ISC COFFEE EVENING 19/10/10

In many European cultures, going for coffee is almost a synonym for relaxation, chat and fun in a very casual, stress-free environment. Following this age-old practice, we at the ISC invite you to come for free coffee (or tea), biscuits and cheese!

Drop in on Tuesday the 19th October from 16.00 to 18.00 for a chat, a munch of free snacks and good company! If you're going to have a break from work...have it the ISC way.

NOTE: The day of 'Coffee Evenings' has changed. It used to be on a Thursday, but it is now on a TUESDAY.

ISC Trip: 23/10/10 ABERFELDY WHISKY DISTILLERY

Tickets for this event will go on sale on Monday 18th at the ISC (22b Buccleuch street) at 18.00, at £12.00 each.

Scotland, aside from being the homeland of golf, is known for being the birthplace of whisky. Follow the ISC on Saturday 23rd October at 8.45a.m. on our trip to Aberfeldy, a small town hidden away in the Scottish highlands, where we plan to visit a whisky distillery owned by Dewar.

Dewar whisky is a guaranteed superb quality highland whisky, and the distillery has just begun the whisky making process for this year. The visit will include entry to a museum about the history of Dewar’s whisky, as well as a walking tour of the distillery itself. At the end of the tour, a free whisky sampling will give your taste buds a flavour of highland Scotch.

Following the tour of the distillery, you may choose to stroll around the picturesque town of Aberfeldy, barely 5 minutes away from the distillery on foot. On the other hand, you can spend the rest of the afternoon at the distillery café.

ISC FILM NIGHT 18/10/10

FILM NIGHT

On Monday 18th October at 19.30, join us for a glimpse into a culture very different from the one of our host country. At 22b Buccleuch street, we at the ISC will be watching PERSEPOLIS, a French animated film (don't worry, it has English subtitles for those of us who are not very fluent in French!). This film is based on a book by Marjane Satrapi about her life in Iran during the 1970s. It's both a technically and an artistically accoladed film and is quite recent too. And in case you get peckish, as most of us do during films, snacks will be available.

Synopsis: [Source: IMDB]
In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life. However, this change proves an equally difficult trial with the young woman finding herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. Even when she returns home, Marji finds that both she and homeland have changed too much and the young woman and her loving family must decide where she truly belongs.

This is a free event, therefore there are no tickets to be sold.

ISC Dunkeld Hiking Trip - 16/10/10

Have you dreamt of exploring the breathtaking Scottish Highlands? Here’s your chance! ISC’s Dunkeld Hiking Trip will not only take you to the praised Highlands, but also, give you the time to admire and explore its sights and sounds!
We’ll be taking two different trails – The Atholl Woods and the Larch Walk.

The Atholl Woods has received applauses from leisure hikers, and its not surprising why. Atholl Woods stretches over many acres of hill country to the north of Dunkeld offering delightful walks and open views around the vast conifer plantations. The walk through Atholl Woods passes along the banks of two small but attractive lochs. Mill Dam always has large numbers of wildfowl, including widgeon, mallard and tufted ducks. Polney Loch, also known as the Goat's Pool, lies beneath the imposing cliffs of Craig a' Barns and has a distinctly Swiss atmosphere created by its situation and scenery.

The Larch Walk is equally stunning. This walk offers in miniature many of the sights to be enjoyed on a larger scale elsewhere in the area. . The Dunkeld Larches can also be seen near the river and include the remaining `Parent Larch`, which stands 100 feet high near the west end of the cathedral. This tree is the last survivor from a group of five planted by the 2nd Duke of Atholl in 1738. Also, hikers will get the chance to visit the Dunkeld Cathedral. The Dunkeld Cathedral is part ruin, part parish church.

So, what are you waiting for? This is YOUR CHANCE to explore the beautiful Highlands on foot, at your own pace instead of just passing by when you’re on a tour bus! We leave at 10.30 a.m. and return at 7.00p.m. on Saturday 16th October.

Tickets will be sold on Monday 11th October at 6.00p.m., in the ISC lounge at £6.00 each.
